It's Zumba Time!

Last Friday evening, Brett and his great team at Gold's prepared for the Zumba Master Class in the parking lot. He rented the stage, organized the DJ from Power99 and got 70 people to dance in the event.  Carolina Arias and Josh Pocaigue were the guest instructors. Carolina in the front is Chilean but lives in Auckland, New Zealand. She is a superb dancer and instructor with loads of enthusiasm and energy. In the back, are Amy and Elly, Saipan's Zumba instructors who teach classes at Gold's.
Friday night was about having fun and dancing our hearts out! There was so much excitement and it brought out many Zumba fans as well as newbies like myself.
On Saturday morning, we started the Zumba Instructor Certification Training with Carolina. There were 39 participants, many from Guam, who absolutely love the Zumba culture and are eager to teach others.
I have always loved to dance and latin rhythms are quite new but it's easy to learn and requires lots of energy.  Zumba is not only for women, either. There were 8 men who attended the certification class, not including Josh from Guam.
The day was spent largely dancing and learning the different types of Zumba basic dances: Merengue, Salsa, Cumbio, Reggaeton. Carolina provided background on the founder of Zumba, Beto Perez, who started this global dance revolution about 12 years ago in Florida.
Zumba combines dance and fitness. It reminds me a bit of Jazzercize, back in the late 80's, early 90's where the choreography was the same for each song.  In Zumba, the choreography can be changed by each individual instructor but the outline of the class must be aligned to the Zumba formula for consistency and brand integrity.
It was a full day of dancing and learning. What's great about Zumba is that they encourage you to have fun, practice (if you want to be an instructor) and spread the Zumba culture.  Josh, pictured below, is a 22 yr old guy from Guam who lost 80 pounds by doing Zumba. He was never a dancer or fitness instructor before, but today, he has a large following of students who love his classes which he teaches 4 times weekly.
Once my shoulder heals, I'll be able to teach a few Zumba classes.
I'm happy to have participated in the Zumba dance party and instructor training.
