The final stop of our four days in Belgium brought us to the capital, Brussels, just another thirty minute train ride from Ghent. For a major European city, Brussels' city centre is compact. Our hotel, the Royal Windsor, located just south of the Grand Place, made walking to many attractions convenient.
The Grand Place / Grote Markt reminded us of Venice's San Marcos Square with tall gothic buildings surrounding an open square with restaurants and shops lined along its perimeter.
We took the train four stations for lunch and then walked from there through Europa, aka European Parliament building, the Royal Palace, the Grand Sablon and back to the Grand Place.
At night, the lights change colors from blue, red, yellow, purple and green on the Grand Place. It's simply gorgeous! May is a nice time to visit with fewer crowds. We were fortunate to enjoy warm weather that day which made walking about comfortable. One day was insufficient to see it all so we'll need to return someday.
